Policy Coordinator
The Policy Coordinator role is ideal for someone seeking to be more involved in Connecticut campaigns focused on criminal justice reform, led by individuals directly impacted by the failed criminal justice system and a broken social safety net. This is a part-time staff position that will be part of a powerful community organization working to increase the number of BILPOC farmers in CT through community organizing, mutual aid, and policy reform.
The Policy Coordinator is the primary staff person for our Monthly Statewide Criminal Justice Reform Call, with responsibilities that include community outreach, legislative advocacy, and community organizing in coordination with Chicks Ahoy Farm’s Community Organizer.
Primary Responsibilities
Staff our Monthly Statewide Criminal Justice Reform Call, including preparing the agendas, reminders, and meeting notes;
Identify and prepare presenters for the Monthly Statewide Criminal Justice Reform Call;
Attend meetings with legislative and policy reform goals across the advocacy field in Connecticut;
Track criminal justice and farming legislative proposals at the CT legislature;
Support meetings with partners, including state agencies, community-based organizations, and Cultivating Justice members;
Implement strategies to achieve CAF’s goals and objectives throughout the state;
Assist the community organizer with outlining probation reform demands with our members;
Assist the President with building and maintaining a media list and press contacts, and with creating and disseminating consistent campaign messaging among all program staff;
In collaboration with management staff, ensure staff adhere to campaign messaging priorities and practices;
Promote a culture of accountability and high-performance standards, encouraging professional development opportunities.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
2-3 years of experience in public policy advocacy, preferably with an effective, visible advocacy organization or public campaigns.
A demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to the issues CAF addresses.
Strong writing, speaking, and analytic skills; the ability to explain and interpret complex issues to the media and general public;
Experience with media communications and a track record of successful interactions with the press.
We value your life experience. You will receive training and professional development; an advanced degree is not required for this position.
Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, creativity, curiosity, and a good sense of humor are a plus, but not required.
Terms of Employment:
This position requires the candidate to reside in Connecticut and is hybrid, with a mix of office hours and remote work. Some work will require travel, evening meetings, and weekend events. The pay rate for this Non-Exempt (hourly) staff position begins at $24 per hour, for approximately 20 hours per week.
